Cambodia's highly stylized classic
dance, adapted from dances performed at Angkor, is performed
to the accompaniement of an archestra and choral narration The
dancers act out stories an legends taken from Hindu epics such
as the Ramayana. In the countryside, wandering troupes perform
folk dramas and folk dances at festivals and weddings. The
actors invariably depict stereotyped characters familiar to
everyone watching: the beautiful princess, the greedy
merchant, the inept lover, the cruel father, the country
bumpkin, and so forth.
