In the countryside, wandering troupes perform folk dramas and folk dances at festivals and weddings. The actors invariably depict stereotyped characters familiar to everyone watching: the beautiful princess, the greedy merchant, the inept lover, the cruel father, the country bumpkin, and so forth.
